Builder Grade

I received a trade magazine by mail today and on the back cover is a sales ad for a large lumber company. One of the more predominate ads is for "Builder Grade -Sold As Is- No Warranty" hardwood flooring in bold type. I stopped and thought for a moment, "When did it become that Builder Grade is now synonymous with low quality, cheap products?" Why would a builder put a no-warranty product into a home he, or she, is selling to the public? It would stand to reason that Builder Grade quality would be the best. Builders build a house to last right? You would think it would be called "Rental Grade", or "Apartment Grade". These names are used in conjuction with cheap. Landlords are renowned for spending as little as possible on their rental units to try and get as much as they can out of them. Be that as it may, Builder Grade is now the norm for low quality and no-warranty products. When you buy a new home, are you really getting a Builder Grade home? I often wonder, if at a home closing, does the builder look across the table and tell Mr. and Mrs. Jones, "You know I put the cheapest things I could find into building your home, and some even have no warranty."

Flooring, Lights, and Counter Tops on the Web

It's been said, "Too many cooks, spoil the stew." The same goes for home products retailers. On line selling has its places, but flooring, lights, and counter tops aren't among them. I can't imagine buying something simply by looking at a picture on the web. Sure, the e-retailer may send a swatch out, but is that swatch from the current production run? Can you be sure of what you're getting? Can you really tell what that finish is on the chandelier in the photo?

Search Engine Optimization Companies are a Waste of Money

Traditional advertising is a circular concept. A business spends money with another business to create advertising for the first business to get new customers and new sales so the first company can spend more with the second company to get more customers and sales. Still a viable concept, but antiquated.

Spring is in the Air

Although there's been a stretch of bad weather lately, I always think Spring is the best time of year. Not to hot or cold, everything's turning green, and things become anew. This is the time I also spend rethinking how I can better service my customers. I'm a firm believer that you can always build a better mousetrap.
