Kitchens continue to be the dominant design area within the home, with dedicated computer work areas or cell-phone and personal digital assistant recharging stations becoming an emerging trend. Another emerging trend is the growing interest in eco-friendly features for kitchens such as bamboo and cork flooring, according to AIA chief economist Kermit Baker. "Water-saving toilets and LED lighting options have become more popular in bathrooms, along with continued strong demand for radiant heated flooring," he added.

With a new year, come new ideas. Metallic tones seem to be the main story for 2008. Lacquered and patina/rusted looks for lighting and cabinet hardware, and low luster, trellis patterns for floor covering are coming on strong. Spring 2008 will bring in Country French blue –deep and rich. Yellow and white will be secondary. Gray will be the neutral.

• Marble, although very beautiful, should only be used in "light" use areas. Composed mainly of calcium carbonate, it scratches easily, and can be etched by acid based products such as lemon juice.
• Granite is much better suited for "heavy" use areas. Composed mostly of quartz, graphite, mica, and other minerals, it's very resistant to etching and scratching.
• Limestone is formed close to the surface and captures fossilized materials.
