I received a trade magazine by mail today and on the back cover is a sales ad for a large lumber company. One of the more predominate ads is for "Builder Grade -Sold As Is- No Warranty" hardwood flooring in bold type. I stopped and thought for a moment, "When did it become that Builder Grade is now synonymous with low quality, cheap products?" Why would a builder put a no-warranty product into a home he, or she, is selling to the public?

It's definetely interesting times we are living in right now. For health care, against health care, for a surge in Afghanistan, against a surge in Afghanistan, for more bail-outs, against more bail-outs. You decide. Things get crazy real quick. But just remember that as long as you have your faith, the love of your family, know the difference between right and wrong, and have a sense of purpose, you'll be OK.

Here's an interesting tid-bit I read the other day. In 1950, the average home size was 983 square feet. By 2007, it had ballooned to 2,479 square feet. In 2008 it dropped to 2,438 square feet. Not a big drop, but maybe people are realizing it takes a lot of energy and expense to heat and cool more square footage. I predict the average sized home will continue to fall and eventually settle around 2,200 square feet. People are wising up that money spent on gas and electric for larger homes could be put to better use.

I was out at a new house the other day and decided to go to the house next door and see what kind of workmanship the tile setter was providing from the competition. Overall, the job was descent until I got to the master bath shower. I was shocked to find that the tile was installed directly on the backerboard without any waterproofing between the two. And, ontop of that, organic tile adhesive was used to set the tile. This is an accident waiting to happen. You can imagine how much water a shower puts out on a weekly basis.

We lost a bid today because another store was cheaper than us on a bamboo flooring installation. We asked the homeowner if the other store was using the recommended adhesive... she didn't know. We asked if the other store was including many other things that we were... she didn't know. Here you have a person getting ready to spend thousands of dollars for new flooring and she doesn't know what she's getting?

Home sales in Crawford and Sebastian counties during May were up despite concerns of a falloff resulting from expiration of federal tax credits for certain homebuyers.
Crawford County saw 63 new and existing homes sold in May, up 7% compared to May 2009, while Sebastian County saw a 29% increase with 143 homes sold in May. The figures are from the King Realty Group’s May report prepared by Realtor Ernie Schimmelman.

I can't seem to wrap my head around the idea of thousands of people marching in the streets to protest an illegal immigrant law enacted by Arizona when thousands upon thousands of gallons of crude oil are spilling in the Gulf of Mexico, destroying the aqua-eco system and putting a stop to people's livelihoods. Why is no one protesting this?

Shaw, Mohawk, and Beaulieu announced a carpet price increase of 5 to 7 percent this month. This will affect all orders shipped from these manufacturers after May 24th.
On a brighter note, housing construction in March rose to its highest level in 16 months, spurred by multi-family construction. Retail sales also rose for the third straight month, helped in part by the increase in sales of building materials. It's amazing how all things work in tandem. More construction means a better economy.

I just learned that tap water is regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and that bottled water is considered a food product, so it's monitored by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Even though both are "water", they're controlled by two different government organizations. Both agencys have seperate rules for reporting contamination and what's considered contamination. FYI, the FDA's rules on what's considered contamination are more flexible than the EPA's rules...

At Home Arkansas reports that Pantone, the world's authority on color, has chosen turquoise as the color of the year in 2010. For homes, Pantone suggests painting it with neautrals to add excitement, with red and pink as complement, or with dark blue for a classic maritime look. They also suggest to bodly mix it with yellow and green for a trendsetting decor.

Been doing some reading on Southwest Airlines and what makes them tick. After pouring over research, I've summarized that the four main points to their success are:
- Keep it quick and easy.
- Keep it simple with minimal frills.
- Exploit smaller, overlooked markets.
- Keep it to one business category.
These points in their business model push them toward one goal, that lower costs equates to more customers.
We are currently shifting our business model using the above points. Look for new things to come.
